Training Day 5

It was extremely difficult to run today. I had to stay more than an extra hour at work, and didn’t start running until 3:00. Even Patrick said it was dangerous to run today. Although the temperature was only 96 degrees when I began, meteorologists reported it feeling like 102 degrees. The humidity in the Mid-West makes running very hard.

I had to do a combination of running and walking. It took me more than 40 minutes to run three miles. I found a water fountain that sprayed water really far and I took a couple breaks to drench myself. I wasn’t able to get half way around the pond before all the water dried up. Plus, my MP3 player’s battery went dead just as I was finishing up my first half mile. Although so much went wrong, I finished the course.

I also saw a guy on the course wearing gloves. I was confused about why he would be wearing those. I was hoping he wasn’t some serial killer who wanted to conceal his fingerprints. I probably shouldn’t be thinking about that sort of thing while I’m running.

I had a sunburn on my face when I was finished. I hope tomorrow is cooler.

Training Day 3: I should eat more

Today was extremely difficult. I ran during the hottest part of the day again, and this time, because of a distraction, I forgot to eat my protein cookie first. I got half way through the run and I was feeling a bit better about finishing. By the time I was 2/3rds done, it seemed impossible.

My head was beginning to hurt, my heart was pounding and I felt like I couldn’t breathe. I felt the sun burning my skin and I couldn’t block out the pain. I was out of energy and still had at least a half mile to go. I start doing a more frequent combination of walking and running until finally I gave up. I walked back home with my head down.

It’s a lesson I’ve already learned. I went running weeks ago without eating enough and had the same thing happened. Today, I felt ready to go. I ate a snack at work, but it wasn’t enough. When I got back home, my face was completely red and sunburned. I was so disappointed. But I’ve got to look on the bright side. I didn’t injure myself, and it’s just a reminder about how important it is to prepare for a run.
